چکیده

[1] A study of the retrieval of sea surface roughness using Global Navigation Satellite System-Reflectometry (GNSSR) from satellite is presented. Delay-Doppler Maps (DDMs) from the SSTL UK-DMC satellite are analyzed to retrieve directional Mean Square Slopes (MSSs). Results are compared to theoretically-derived MSSs and in situ measurements from co-located buoys of the National Data Buoy Center (NDBC), showing good agreement in most cases. Here, the whole DDM, a more complete source of information, is exploited for the first time using satellite GNSS-R data. These are potentially able to provide high spatial and temporal sampling, and therefore offer an improved way to observe wind and waves by means of a very modest instrument. Citation: Clarizia, M. Sensing Ocean, Ice and Land Reflected Signals from Space: Results from the UK-DMC GPS Reflectometry Experiment

The use of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) signals reflected from the Earth’s surface has progressed from its beginnings in the early 1990’s to a demonstrated practical linkage of measurements to geophysical characteristics of ocean, ice and land surfaces. A pioneering space-based experiment was carried on the UK-DMC satellite launched in September of 2003. The GPS receiver on the sat...

Sea Ice Detection Based on Differential Delay-Doppler Maps from UK TechDemoSat-1

Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) signals can be exploited to remotely sense atmosphere and land and ocean surface to retrieve a range of geophysical parameters. This paper proposes two new methods, termed as power-summation of differential Delay-Doppler Maps (PS-D) and pixel-number of differential Delay-Doppler Maps (PN-D), to distinguish between sea ice and sea water using differentia...

The Space GPS Reflectometry Experiment On the UK Disaster Monitoring Constellation Satellite

A spaceborne GNSS reflectometry experiment is to be undertaken by Surrey Satellite Technology Limited with support from the British National Space Centre (BNSC) to investigate the reception of reflected GPS signals off the ocean for oceanography applications. The GPS receiver on the UK-DMC satellite has been modified to accommodate a downward (nadir) pointing high gain antenna, to send sampled ...

A Numerical Study on the Influence of Ocean Surfacewaves on Gps-reflected Signals

1. ABSTRACT The ability to investigate properties of the sea surface by means of navigation signals has recently received growing interest from the remote sensing community. This innovative technique is known as Global Navigation Satellite System-Reflectometry (GNSS-R), and it relies on signals of opportunity transmitted from GNSS Constellations (e.g. GPS, Glonass, Galileo etc.), and reflected ...

Evaluation of Geometric and Atmospheric Doppler for GNSS-RO Payloads

To reduce the sampling rate in global navigation satellite system (GNSS)-radio occultation receivers, it is essential to establish a suitable estimation of Doppler frequency from the received signal in the satellite onboard receiver. This receiver is usually located on low earth orbit satellite and receives GNSS satellites signal in the occultation situation. The occurred Doppler on the signal ...
